A Modeler’s Gem in Atlantic Canada

When it comes to a summer vacation, I tend to be a beach bum. And by that I mean a nice cottage by some water, access to kayaks and bikes, and a full propane tank on the BBQ. A rainy day usually means a road trop to some museum or similar attraction. Otherwise, games, books and the occasional video keep me happy enough.

This year we made our way out to a cabin by the sea in Nova Scotia. Most days it was me taking the little one down to a beach and occasionally going in the water. While she had no issue at all with creepy crawly things on her feet, I was a big baby about it. See, I am a simple man. I just like sand and water. Crabs, and other creatures are for the deep. I guess that’s the difference between a lake and an ocean.

My good friend Jim Bates from the A Scale Canadian blog arranged a tour for me at the Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum across from the Halifax Airport. I am sure glad he did. Not only did I meet some absolutely great guys, I had a chance to see inside a few of the aircraft on display there. What a treat. Moreover, the ACAM has an amazing gift shop. Not to spoil it, but it is a fully stocked hobby shop – and an impressive one at that. I took more than a few pictures:

If a video is more your speed, well look no further. I had some fun putting this one together – so please let me know what you think!

I was feeling saucy at the end of my tour so I needed to get something from the hobby shop. It was a tough choice but in the end I got a Hasegawa F-111A Vietnam in 72nd and an ICM B-26 Counter Invader in 48th.  Now, what I don’t know about the air war over Vietnam can fill a library but I am really keen on those camo patterns. I definitely see tans, greens and black paints in my future!

  1. What a cool place for a summer vacation, and such a nice museum. If you haven’t visited the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario, please book a visit ASAP. It is home to one of only two airworthy Avro Lancasters on the planet.
