Last weekend I attended my first ever swap meet. Not only was it my first swap meet, it was my first time as a vendor at any sort of model show. Did I sell anything? Yeah, a couple of things. Did I buy anything? Actually, I did not buy anything. But boy, did I sure have a good time!
When the notices for this swap meet went up last month, I immediately signed up before turning my mind towards things I should sell. See, there have been no model shows or build nights or much of any local modeling scene for almost a year. Well, since at least the end of October 2019. So, let’s just say we (and definitely “I”) have been hungry for something model related for a while.
For the last few weeks I’ve been culling the stash, reducing the aftermarket, stacking some old books and magazines and I even cleared out some old built kits from the display case. Everything was priced to move! You see, I thought the point of the swap meet was similar to that of the garage sale: everything must go. Turns out, I was wrong. The point of this swap meet was to see people, see models and talk models again. I had a blast talking with all the regular suspects of our local modeling scene.

Last Thing
I’ve always associated the term “swap meet” with an informal gathering of all things hobby related in some sort of field with a lot of station wagons and guys who smoke filterless cigarettes while holding stubby beer bottles. That seems very descriptive. I think I saw a picture featuring these images in a hobby magazine when I was a kid. At any rate, this swap meet was a bit less edgy and until we get our shows back, it filled the void.

Yep, swap meets don’t have to involve tobacco or beer. They can quite civilized without that stuff and personally, a whole lot more fun.

That looked like a good time was had by all. The store looks good too. I haven’t been there since they were located just east of the downtown.
